This story I’m sharing with the entire world about what exactly happened to one of the most beautiful countries in the world. It all started with the president who caused an economic crisis that is currently happening in Sri Lanka. This is mainly because of the corruption of the government and poor management skills and stealing billions of dollars for their own benefit.
Sri Lanka is an island located in the Indian ocean. It is often called the pearl of the Indian ocean. Despite the size of the island, Sri Lanka has a population of about 20 million people. The primary sources of this island’s economy are agriculture, fishing, manufacturing, and tourism. Sri Lanka is well known for its vast plains and mountains, as well as tea plantations and beautiful temples. I believe most people around the world are familiar with the name Ceylon because Sri Lanka used to be called Ceylon back in the day, which was given by the Europeans. This name is still used occasionally for trade purposes. Despite the natural beauties in the country, Sri Lanka is currently going under an abominable economic crisis.
On November 18th, 2019 Gotabaya Rajapaksa was appointed as the eighth president of Sri Lanka. As soon as he became president, he appointed his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister of the country. This is when the downfall of the country began. Gotabaya Rajapaksa started borrowing money from other countries and keeping it for himself without contributing to the country’s development. Doing so the country lost access to overseas markets. Sri Lanka then had to use its foreign exchange reserves to pay off government debt. This affected imports of fuel and other essentials, which sent prices soaring. Now, people can’t feed their families or fill up their cars. People must now queue for hours for fuel, frequently clashing with police and military. Supermarket shelves are empty. Medicine supplies are rapidly depleting. And it is the Rajapaksas to people blame. For months, angry Sri Lankans have taken to the streets protesting and accusing Gotabaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa of mismanaging the economy. Since the government placed restrictions on cash flow out of the country, students who are studying abroad do not have access to their funds back home. This caused Sri Lankan students to do multiple jobs and balance their studies at the same time which is nearly impossible for most students.
Due to all these protests, not only in Sri Lanka but all over the world, the people of Sri Lanka might have won the battle against the government. This caused the president and the prime minister to resign, which relieved the people of Sri Lanka. Hopefully, there will be some kind of improvement in the country, and everything will return to the way it was.
